Newly elected New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Women’s Organiser Mavis Hawa Koomson has stepped up her grassroots engagement, combining community health advocacy with political mobilisation as she rallies support for NPP flagbearer and former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Ms Koomson demonstrated her commitment to reconnecting with constituents during a visit to her constituency, where she participated in a Breast Cancer Awareness and Free Health Screening programme aimed at promoting early detection, preventive healthcare and the general well-being of residents.
The visit also provided an opportunity for the NPP women’s leader to interact with market women and other community members, listen to their concerns and strengthen relationships with the grassroots, which remain central to the party’s mobilisation efforts.
Sharing her experience, Koomson expressed satisfaction with being among her people, describing the opportunity to interact with constituents and receive their support as one of the most fulfilling aspects of her political work.
She said reconnecting with the community and engaging directly with residents remained important to understanding their everyday challenges, aspirations and expectations for a better future.
Health Screening Takes Centre Stage
The Breast Cancer Awareness and Free Health Screening programme formed a major part of Koomson’s visit, bringing attention to the importance of preventive healthcare and early detection.
Breast cancer awareness campaigns encourage women to become more conscious of changes in their bodies and seek medical attention when necessary. Early detection can improve the prospects of timely diagnosis and treatment.
By participating in the programme, she highlighted the importance of community-based health initiatives in promoting public awareness and encouraging residents to prioritise their health.
The statement announcing her visit did not provide details about the number of people screened, the medical conditions covered or the healthcare professionals involved in the exercise.
Nevertheless, the programme provided a platform for health advocacy while enabling the politician to engage with residents on issues affecting their welfare.
Market Women Remain Central to Grassroots Engagement
Beyond the health programme, Ms Koomson made time to visit and interact with market women, whom she described as hardworking members of the community whose daily struggles and aspirations continue to inspire her political commitment.
Her engagement with the traders reflected an effort to maintain direct contact with constituents and understand the concerns of people whose livelihoods depend on daily commercial activities.
Market women play a significant role in local economies through trading, food distribution and other commercial activities. Their concerns often include the cost of doing business, access to capital, market conditions and the wider economic environment.
Although Ms Koomson did not outline specific commitments arising from her discussions with the traders, she emphasised the importance of remaining connected to the grassroots and maintaining relationships with the people she represents.
The visit therefore combined community engagement with a broader message about the importance of listening to residents and recognising their contributions to local development.
Bawumia’s 2028 Presidential Bid Features in Constituency Visit
The visit also carried a political message, as Mrs Koomson encouraged the market women and other constituents to support Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in the 2028 presidential election.
Dr Bawumia, the NPP’s presidential candidate for the 2024 general election, won the party’s presidential primary held on January 31, 2026, securing the mandate to lead the party into the next national election.
Koomson’s appeal forms part of the broader political mobilisation expected to take place as the NPP works to consolidate support around its flagbearer and prepare for the 2028 electoral contest.
Her message sought to connect community engagement with the party’s political objectives, urging constituents to join efforts towards what she described as building a better future for Ghana.
She concluded her message by emphasising the importance of her relationship with her constituents, describing them as her strength and reaffirming her commitment to working with them.
