Heroic Eloy Room Secures Historic World Cup Point For Curaçao Against Ecuador

BY Issah Olegor

Curaçao produced one of the biggest surprises of the FIFA World Cup 2026 after holding Ecuador to a goalless draw in Kansas City, with goalkeeper Eloy Room delivering a sensational performance to earn the Caribbean nation its first-ever point at football’s biggest tournament.

The result represents a landmark moment in Curaçao’s football history and keeps alive the nation’s hopes of reaching the knockout stages despite entering the competition as one of the tournament’s underdogs.

While Ecuador dominated possession, created the majority of the chances and spent much of the evening camped inside the Curaçao half, they found themselves repeatedly frustrated by an inspired Room, whose outstanding goalkeeping display proved the difference between defeat and a historic result.

The draw also had significant implications for Group E, confirming Germany’s qualification to the Round of 32 as group winners while leaving Côte d’Ivoire, Ecuador and Curaçao all with a chance of progressing heading into the final round of matches.

Ecuador entered the contest under pressure following their narrow 1-0 defeat to Côte d’Ivoire in their opening match. Knowing that only victory would significantly improve their qualification hopes, La Tricolor began the game with urgency and purpose.

The South Americans created their first major opportunity early in the encounter when midfielder Moisés Caicedo delivered an excellent pass over the Curaçao defence to veteran striker Enner Valencia. The experienced forward found himself one-on-one with Eloy Room and appeared destined to score.

However, Room produced the first of several crucial interventions, denying Valencia and setting the tone for what would become an unforgettable night for the Curaçao goalkeeper.

Despite Ecuador’s dominance, Curaçao showed they were not prepared to simply defend throughout the match. As Ecuador pushed players forward in search of an early breakthrough, spaces began to emerge at the other end.

Leandro Bacuna and Jürgen Locadia capitalised on those opportunities with intelligent runs and quick transitions that occasionally troubled the Ecuadorian defence. Although Curaçao was unable to convert its own chances, the Caribbean side demonstrated enough attacking intent to keep Ecuador cautious.

As the match progressed, Ecuador’s pressure intensified. Wave after wave of attacks tested the resolve of the Curaçao defence, but every time a breakthrough seemed imminent, Room stood firm.

The experienced goalkeeper produced a series of spectacular saves that gradually frustrated Ecuador’s players and supporters alike. His positioning, reflexes and command of the penalty area were exceptional as he repeatedly denied some of South America’s most dangerous attackers.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Ecuador controlling possession and launching relentless attacks while Curaçao defended bravely and looked to strike on the counterattack whenever opportunities arose.

As the clock ticked down, Ecuador became increasingly desperate. Enner Valencia came close once again when he met a dangerous cross with a powerful header, only for Room to react brilliantly and keep the ball out.

The frustration continued to mount for Ecuador as their attempts repeatedly failed to produce the desired result. In addition to Room’s heroics, fortune also favoured Curaçao, with Ecuador striking the woodwork three times during the match.

By the final whistle, Ecuador had recorded nearly 30 attempts on goal and enjoyed overwhelming territorial dominance. Yet despite their superiority, they were unable to find a way past the determined Curaçao defence and their outstanding goalkeeper.

The draw ensured that Curaçao collected the first World Cup point in the nation’s history, a milestone achievement for a team making only its second appearance at football’s global showpiece.
