Many Ghanaians especially voters in the Ablekuma North constituency of the Greater Accra Region are wondering what could have informed the decision of the Electoral Commission (EC) to rerun elections in nineteen polling stations in the electoral area.
Following the controversy surrounding the collation and declaration of a winner in this constituency during the last December polls many commentaries have been made.
The lawlessness visited by NDC thugs in some parts of the constituency made headlines especially the impact of the nonsense in the delayed declaration of the winner in the electoral contest.
Dr. Bossman Asare was in Parliament to field questions from the august house the bottom-line being that there would not be a rerun of elections in the three disputed stations of the constituency.
Fast forward an announcement is made by the EC to the effect that there is going to be a rerun of the elections in 19 polling stations and no even three.
The conversations which this has generated is not in the interest of the image of the EC and our democracy.
We were wrong when we thought we have outgrown the rule of man driven democracy.
The recent harassment of the EC by the NDC is thought to be responsible for the EC decision to vary its decision. Cynics think the managers of the EC want to keep their jobs hence their altered stance on the Ablekuma North constituency debacle.
How would a now dented election management body such as the EC be able to stand up to the bullying tactics of the NDC during a major election?
The EC decision requires convincing explanation but even then we doubt they would be able to alter the negative impression they have courted for themselves.
Inconsistencies in the positions of an institution or even individual define his or their integrities.
The EC cannot afford to dance to the tunes of the NDC. This is the impression of the people out there in the country.
We are worried about the country’s democracy because there is no doubt that the NDC have mischievous plans which are anything but inuring to the good of our country.
It is glaring that the Ablekuma North election was won by the NPP lady but the NDC as part of their grand diabolical plan tore up pink sheets in some of the stations. Not satisfied they torched the stored election material in a public school. Only a loser would behave in this fashion.
If the police could not provide security for the collation of results in three polling stations can they do same for the rerun of polls in 19 areas?
The non-confirmation of results by a presiding officer does not invalidate the outcome of an election is the ruling by one of the justices in one of the election petition hearing in the country.
There is too much hypocrisy in this country and the earlier we stopped it the better it would be for us.
We stand against the EC decision and call upon well-meaning Ghanaians who cherish the blossoming of our democracy to go to court and stop the rerun in the 19 polling stations.
