Judge Denies Bail To Wontumi Multimedia Broadcaster Again

The legal battle involving Wontumi Multimedia broadcaster, Emmanuel Asare KwakyeEmmanuel Asare Kwakye, popularly known as Akyemkwah, has taken yet another dramatic turn as a Circuit Court judge in Accra once again denied him bail, prolonging his stay in police custody.

At the latest hearing on Monday, August 25, 2025, at Circuit Court 9, the relieving judge adjourned the case to Wednesday, August 27, for a ruling on the prosecution’s opposition to the bail application.

The prosecution, led by a state attorney, told the court that his “instruction” was to oppose the bail request despite acknowledging that investigations into the matter had already been concluded.

When pressed by the judge to justify the opposition, the prosecution argued that the accused might abscond if granted bail.

However, the judge challenged the basis of this fear, pointing out the lack of concrete evidence to support such a claim.

This development adds to the growing controversy surrounding the broadcaster’s detention.

Just last week, on Thursday, August 21, the same Circuit Court failed to sit on the matter after the judge closed proceedings for the day without calling the case.

Prior to that, the court had not sat on Wednesday, August 20, further stalling the process.

Defence lawyers had earlier reached an agreement with the prosecution for the case to be heard on August 21 after prosecutors initially sought to push it to Monday, August 25.

However, the delay meant that Kwakye continued to remain in police custody beyond the period initially determined by the court, sparking concerns among his supporters about procedural fairness.

The back-and-forth has left many questioning the consistency of the judicial process and the alldeged government interference in the judicial process.

While the prosecution maintains that the broadcaster should remain in custody, critics argue that the shifting timelines and repeated adjournments are unfairly extending his detention.

The case, which has drawn considerable public attention, is now set for a decisive ruling on Wednesday, August 27, when the judge is expected to pronounce on whether Akyemkwah will be granted bail or remain in custody.

For now, the twists and turns in the matter reflect what some observers describe as a “legal kente” – woven with delays, adjournments, and uncertainty – leaving both the accused and his supporters in limbo.
