President John Dramani Mahama has officially released a new list of Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) for the Eastern Region, marking a major reshuffle in local governance.

The announcement, made in accordance with Article 243(1) of the 1992 Constitution and Section 20(1) of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936 as amended), was communicated through a press release signed by the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim (MP), on April 29, 2025.

This list, sourced from an official letter by the Office of the President (Ref. No. OPS 103/25/1684), names 33 individuals nominated to steer development and governance across the various districts in the Eastern Region.

It comes as part of the John Mahama administration’s broader plan to rejuvenate grassroots political leadership ahead of the 2026 general elections.

The reshuffle reflects strategic political recalibration and local representation across diverse communities.

Among the nominees is Kate Mawusi Babanawo, selected for the Kwaku Afram Plains North District, and Moses Tangmee for Kwahu Afram Plains South, signaling a balance between technocratic experience and grassroots activism.

Samuel Asamoah, tapped for the Kwahu East District, and Effah Osei Bonsu David, nominated for Kwahu South, also feature prominently.

In Kwahu West, Tamimu Halidu takes the reins, expected to bring in a more assertive development agenda for the district.

Veteran local administrator Hakeem Antwi Abdul is poised to lead the Birim North District, while Ernest Owusu Ntim and Amo John Anom are nominated for Atiwa East and Atiwa West respectively.

Eric William Ayettey is named for the Okere District, with Emmanuel Kofi Nti handling responsibilities in Kweabibrim.

In the Akyem zone, the President nominated Mercy Korang (Fanteakwa South), Osumanu Abubakar (Fanteakwa North), Solomon Kusi Brako (Brim Central), Taaju Rahim (Birim South), and Samuel Owusu Brako (Achiase).

Linda Ahenkora, known for her previous advocacy work in rural education, is the nominee for Akyemansa District.

The mining and agrarian district of Denkyembour will now be overseen by Umar Ahmed, while Eric Ahinakwa will serve as DCE for Asene-Manso Akroso.

In Upper and Lower West Akim, Rebecca Chissah and Paulina Akabila have been nominated respectively.

John Martey is nominated for Lower Manya Krobo, Philibert Amenorpe Selorm Fumey for Nsawam Adoagyiri, and Joshua Lartey for the Kraboa Coatal District.

The New Juaben municipalities will be led by Samuel Adongo (North) and Ransford Owusu Boakye (South).

In the Akuapem Ridge, John Evans Kumordzi and Paul Osae Offei are to lead Akuapem North and South respectively.

Nana Adu Sarpong Addo Aikins (Abuakwa South) and Charles Darko Yeboah (Abuakwa North) complete the nominees for that enclave.

Lydia Ohenewa Sarah has been nominated for Suhum, Francis Addo Akumatey for Yilo Krobo, and Emmanuel Kwesi Lawer for Upper Manya Krobo.

Lastly, Godwin Bobobee has been nominated for Asuogyaman District.

This sweeping nomination of new DCEs is expected to energize the local government machinery, with district assemblies now tasked with approving the President’s choices.

Political observers believe this list reflects President Mahama’s strategic balancing act—infusing new energy into his second-term governance agenda while retaining experienced hands.

The coming weeks will be crucial as local assemblies deliberate on the nominations.
