MTN Ghana has officially launched activities to commemorate its 30th anniversary, using the milestone to announce a renewed commitment to the digital transformation through major investments in fibre infrastructure, network modernization, and sustainable technology platforms.

The anniversary celebrations, launched on May 14 at MTN House in Accra under the theme “30 Years of Progress, Powered by You,” brought together government officials, industry stakeholders, and members of the media to reflect on the company’s journey since entering Ghana’s telecommunications market in 1996.

Speaking at the launch, the Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, Stephen Blewett, described the company’s three-decade journey as more than a business success story, emphasizing its role in transforming lives and supporting national development through connectivity and digital inclusion.

“This is not just about towers and cables,” he stated. “It is about people—farmers, traders, students, nurses, and entrepreneurs—whose lives have been transformed by the ability to connect.”

Major Investments Planned for Ghana’s Digital Future

Blewett disclosed that MTN Ghana is positioning itself for the next phase of Ghana’s digital economy through targeted investments in fibre expansion, core network modernization, and advanced technologies aimed at boosting productivity, innovation, and economic growth.

According to him, technology is increasingly becoming the backbone of development across sectors such as agriculture, education, healthcare, commerce, and the creative industry.

“The next phase of Ghana’s development will be built on mobile platforms on farms, in markets, in clinics, classrooms, and creative studios,” he said. “Technology will remove geography as a disadvantage and open Ghanaian talent to the world.”

The MTN Ghana CEO further emphasized that sustainability remains central to the company’s long-term strategy, highlighting ongoing investments in renewable energy solutions, resilient digital infrastructure, and responsible technology deployment to ensure future-ready growth while protecting the environment.

Mobile Money and National Impact

Reflecting on MTN Ghana’s evolution over the years, Blewett singled out the transformative role of Mobile Money in deepening financial inclusion and supporting millions of households and small businesses across the country.

He noted that the company’s impact on Ghana extends beyond telecommunications, citing contributions through taxes, continuous infrastructure expansion, and social investments delivered via the MTN Ghana Foundation in areas such as health, education, youth empowerment, and skills development.

“Connectivity is no longer a luxury,” he stressed. “It is essential national infrastructure, and MTN Ghana has a responsibility to ensure it is reliable, inclusive, and future ready.”

Government Commends MTN’s Contribution

Delivering the keynote address, the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, congratulated MTN Ghana on its 30-year milestone and described the company as a central player in Ghana’s telecommunications success story.

According to the Minister, the telecom sector has evolved into a modern, data-driven ecosystem serving tens of millions of subscribers, with MTN Ghana playing a leading role through innovations such as GSM technology, Mobile Money services, and sustained network investments.
