The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced plans to stage a nationwide youth-led demonstration on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, in response to what it describes as a campaign of harassment and politically motivated arrests by the Ghana Police Service.
The protest, which will begin at the Obra Spot in Accra and proceed to the Police Headquarters, was confirmed by the party’s National Youth Organiser, Salam Mustapha, in a Facebook post on Friday, September 12.
He declared that the demonstration is aimed at drawing public attention to what the NPP views as state-sponsored intimidation of its officials and grassroots members.
Arrest Of Bono Regional Chairman
The immediate trigger for the demonstration is the arrest and detention of the party’s Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC. He was picked up on September 8 and later charged with offensive conduct conducive to the breach of public peace and the publication of false news.
An Accra Circuit Court subsequently ordered his remand into custody for one week while investigations continue.
Abronye is expected to reappear in court on September 19. His detention has sparked outrage among party supporters, and civil society groups with calls for his release growing louder in recent days.
Widening Investigations Against Party Figures
The discontent within the NPP deepened after news broke that the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the party, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is also under investigation.
Wontumi is facing allegations of fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering—claims he has strongly denied.
Beyond these two high-profile figures, several other NPP members and affiliates have reportedly been arrested or are under investigation in separate cases.
Party executives say these incidents collectively form part of a deliberate strategy by state institutions to weaken the NPP ahead of future political contests.
Youth Wing Mobilisation
According to Salam Mustapha, the NPP Youth Wing will mobilise thousands of young people across the country to join the protest.
“Tuesday, 23rd September, the National Youth Wing will organise a demo against the state-sponsored police harassment. From Obra Spot to police headquarters. 6 a.m. sharp!” he posted.
He added that the youth wing would not allow what it perceives as politically engineered intimidation to go unchallenged, vowing that the demonstration will send a strong signal of resistance to authorities.
