The Upper East Regional Police Command has arrested seven suspected armed robbers in connection with a series of robbery activities reported in Zebilla, Garu and Binduri in the Upper East Region.
The suspects, according to the Police, were arrested during an intelligence-led operation involving personnel from the Police Intelligence Directorate (PID), the newly formed Black Cobra Unit and the Zebilla Community Watchdogs.
The seven suspects have been identified as Issaka Iddrisu, 20; Ali Tamimu, 21; Akugre Amobila, 26; Banabas Apiiga, 41; Abdul-Rashid Adamu, 38; Apiiga Alebena, 21; and Bilal Adabodee, 31.
The Police said preliminary investigations following their arrest had uncovered links between the suspects and a wider network of criminal gangs allegedly operating in the area. According to the Command, the suspects have confessed to belonging to a broader network of gangs that allegedly supply weapons to members to facilitate robbery operations in Zebilla, Garu and Binduri.
Victims Identify Suspects
The investigation gained further momentum after two alleged victims reported to the Police following the arrest of the suspects.The victims reportedly identified two of the suspects as members of a group of three armed robbers who allegedly attacked them at gunpoint.
During the robbery, the suspects allegedly seized two Yamaha scooter motorbikes, valued at approximately GH¢30,000 and GH¢32,000 respectively. The victims told investigators that the robbers threatened to kill them if they reported the incident to the Police.
The two suspects subsequently admitted to the robbery, according to the Police.
Investigators say the suspects further disclosed that the firearm allegedly used during the operation was supplied by an individual based in Bawku, who reportedly serves as a source of weapons for the group and also provides a place for the weapons to be kept.
Police investigations are continuing to establish the identity and whereabouts of the alleged weapons supplier.
Motorbikes, Drugs and Cash Recovered Following the arrests, Police conducted searches at the residences of Abdul-Rashid Adamu, Apiiga Alebena and Bilal Adabode.
The searches allegedly led to the recovery of two unregistered motorbikes, quantities of suspected hard drugs and GH¢29,550 in cash. The Police believe the cash could be proceeds from the suspects’ alleged criminal activities, although the circumstances surrounding the money and other recovered items remain subject to investigation.
The recovery of the motorbikes is also expected to form part of the ongoing investigation as officers work to establish whether they are connected to other reported robbery incidents in the region.
Court Remands Seven Suspects
Following their arrest and initial investigations, all seven suspects were put before the Bolgatanga Circuit Court.
The court subsequently remanded them into police custody. They are expected to reappear before the court on September 23, 2026, as investigations continue.
