Police Bust 6,000 Parcels Of Wee On Volta Lake

In one of the most significant anti-narcotics operations in recent months, the Eastern North Regional Police Command has intercepted a massive consignment of suspected Indian hemp being ferried across the Volta Lake.

The operation, which took place near Asuboni in the Kwahu Adawso enclave on May 28, 2025, led to the arrest of three individuals believed to be part of a larger drug trafficking network operating within the region.

The suspects — Abraham Agonu, Michael Akuaku, and Confidence Amenuveve — were apprehended while transporting a staggering 5,950 parcels of compressed and non-compressed leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

The parcels were concealed in 85 maxi sacks, suggesting a well-organized trafficking scheme.

Police sources say the suspects were intercepted aboard a large engine boat equipped with two outboard motors as they attempted to navigate the lake route, a corridor increasingly being exploited by criminal networks due to its remoteness and lack of routine surveillance.

In addition to the suspected narcotics, the arresting officers also retrieved a pump-action shotgun, raising further concerns about the security risks posed by such operations.

The seizure, authorities believe, prevented a substantial quantity of illicit drugs from reaching illicit markets, likely destined for distribution in other regions of the country or across borders.

Preliminary investigations have identified a man only known as Felix as the alleged mastermind of the operation.

Police believe he boarded a different vessel and may have disembarked in the Akate area, evading capture.

A manhunt has since been launched to track him and other possible accomplices.
