The Ghana Police Service is reportedly searching for former professional boxer Michael Ayittey Okine, popularly known as Ayittey Powers, following allegations that he threatened to “gun down” National Sports Authority (NSA) Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah in a viral video.
The alleged threat has triggered security concerns and reportedly prompted efforts to locate the retired boxer for questioning over the contents of the video.
The development is believed to be linked to an ongoing disagreement between Ayittey Powers and the NSA over the approval and cancellation of boxing events.
According to reports circulating alongside the viral footage, the former boxer expressed his frustration over decisions regarding boxing programmes, and the dispute eventually escalated into an alleged threat against the NSA Director-General.
A live video attributed to Ayittey Powers has been widely circulated, in which he allegedly used threatening language against Ampofo Ankrah, including a statement that he would “gun down” the NSA boss.
The seriousness of the allegation has reportedly led to security operations to trace the former boxer, although an official public statement from the Ghana Police Service confirming his arrest or declaring him wanted had not been issued at the time of the report.
The controversy comes amid continuing tensions within Ghana’s boxing fraternity over the organisation and approval of boxing events and the role of the National Sports Authority in regulating sporting activities.
