Sammi Awuku Declares War On NDC Parliamentary Seats Ahead Of 2028 Showdown

With the next general elections still two years away, the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is already setting the tone for what promises to be an intense political battle in 2028, as party stalwarts openly declare a nationwide strategy to wrestle parliamentary control from the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The latest salvo comes from the Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Samuel “Sammi” Awuku, who has signaled a full-scale political offensive targeting every constituency currently held by the NDC.

Speaking during an engagement with members of the Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON) in Parliament on Wednesday, March 18, Sammi Awuku stressed that the NPP will leave no constituency uncontested, insisting that “no NDC seat will be safe” in the next elections.

His comments reinforce a broader posture adopted by the NPP leadership following its defeat in the 2024 general elections, which saw the NDC regain both the presidency and a commanding majority in Parliament.

Since then, the NPP Minority Caucus has been working to rebuild its grassroots structures while projecting confidence in a political comeback.

Addressing the TESCON executives, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin underscored the party’s readiness to reclaim power, arguing that victory in 2028 will depend heavily on discipline, loyalty, and aggressive voter engagement.

According to him, the NPP remains a formidable political force capable of overturning its current minority status if party faithful remain committed to the cause.

“If elections were held today, we would be the majority—but that will require hard work and loyalty,” he told the students, urging them to take an active role in mobilization efforts, particularly across tertiary institutions.

Sammi Awuku, in his remarks, went a step further by outlining what appears to be a deliberate strategy to neutralize the NDC’s parliamentary strongholds. He indicated that the NPP would approach every NDC-held seat with the same intensity typically reserved for swing constituencies, effectively eliminating the notion of “safe seats” in Ghanaian politics.

“We are going to storm every constituency. The 2028 elections are all play, all play. No NDC seat is safe. We will approach every NDC seat like a normal seat,” he declared.

He also hinted at an aggressive campus-based political campaign, with TESCON expected to play a central role in energizing the youth vote and expanding the party’s reach among first-time voters.

In a remark that drew attention, Sammi Awuku suggested that the NPP would counter what he described as populist economic messaging from its opponents, stating that “everybody’s ‘World Bank’ will be a microcredit scheme”—a comment widely interpreted as a critique of government-linked social intervention narratives.

The NPP’s renewed offensive comes against the backdrop of its criticisms of the current administration led by President John Dramani Mahama.

Party leaders have accused the government of underperforming on key campaign promises, including the much-publicized 24-hour economy policy, stagnation in cocoa producer price increments, and recent hikes in utility tariffs.

Afenyo-Markin also used the platform to dismiss claims that the NPP marginalizes certain ethnic groups, maintaining that the party remains inclusive and committed to national unity.

The growing rhetoric from the NPP signals an early start to campaign positioning ahead of 2028, with both major political parties expected to intensify their engagements across communities, campuses, and key voting blocs in the coming months.
