Management of the Gbewa College of Education in Pusiga, in the Upper East Region, has announced the death of a lecturer, Issaka Abdulai, amid renewed tensions in the Bawku area.
According to a statement issued by the College on Saturday, September 12, 2026, Abdulai, who was a lecturer in the Science Department, reportedly died after he was beaten by military personnel in Bawku on the night of Friday, September 11.
The College described the development as a deeply sad incident and expressed concern over the loss of a member of its academic community.
“Management is saddened to announce the death of Mr. Issaka Abdulai, a lecturer in the Science Department,” the statement said, adding that the lecturer “was beaten to death by the military in Bawku last night.”
Management, however, did not provide further details about the circumstances surrounding the alleged incident, including where exactly it occurred, what led to the confrontation or the identities of the military personnel allegedly involved. The College said further information would be communicated as details become available.
The death comes against the backdrop of the long-running security and communal tensions in Bawku, where disputes and violence have periodically created serious challenges for residents, businesses, educational institutions and security agencies.
