A historic tree in Agona in the Ashanti Region, traditionally believed to have been planted by legendary Asante priest Okomfo Anokye, has been uprooted following strong winds that swept through the community on Tuesday.

The incident has attracted considerable attention, given the tree’s historical and cultural significance to the Asante Kingdom. Some historical accounts estimate that the tree has stood for approximately 330 years, with its origins traced to around 1690.

Videos circulating on social media show the tree lying upside down after it was uprooted, with its roots exposed and pointing skyward while its branches rested on the ground.

The tree, popularly known as the ‘Onton tree’, is traditionally associated with Okomfo Anokye, one of the most influential spiritual figures in Asante history. It is believed to have been planted by the legendary priest as a symbol of spiritual significance to the Asante Kingdom.

The unusual manner in which the tree fell has triggered conversations among residents, with some interpreting its upside-down position as a possible spiritual sign.

However, these interpretations remain personal and traditional beliefs, while the reported cause of the incident is the strong wind that passed through the area.

Although the full extent of the damage and any plans to preserve or restore the historic site have not been established, the incident has left residents reflecting on the loss of a tree they regard as an important part of their community’s heritage.
