By Issah Olegor

In a major legal development that has sent shockwaves across the football world, Ghanaian international and Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey has been officially charged by the Metropolitan Police in London with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.

The charges stem from incidents alleged to have occurred between 2021 and 2022.

According to an official statement released by the Metropolitan Police, the 31-year-old footballer is accused by three different women.

The charges are:

Two counts of rape involving one complainant

Three additional counts of rape connected to a second woman

One count of sexual assault related to a third complainant

Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, speaking on behalf of the police, confirmed that the investigation commenced in February 2022, following the receipt of an initial rape report.

He emphasized that the primary concern of the authorities is the welfare of the survivors who have come forward.

“Our priority remains providing support to the women who have come forward. We encourage anyone with further information to speak with our team,” said Det. Supt. Furphy.

Career Milestones Amid Legal Troubles

The charges come just days after Thomas Partey officially parted ways with Arsenal Football Club, marking the end of his four-year tenure at the North London club.
Partey joined Arsenal in October 2020 from Atlético Madrid in a high-profile £45.3 million transfer, making him one of Ghana’s most expensive and high-profile exports.

During his time at Arsenal, Partey made 130 Premier League appearances, scored nine goals, and was widely regarded as a key figure in Mikel Arteta’s midfield.

In the 2024/25 season, he played 35 Premier League games, scoring four goals and helping the club to a second-place league finish.

He also made notable contributions in the UEFA Champions League, appearing 12 times and playing a pivotal role in Arsenal’s journey to the semi-finals, where they were eventually eliminated by Paris Saint-Germain, the tournament’s eventual champions.

Fallout and Next Steps

The revelation of these charges is likely to have a profound impact not only on Partey’s future in football but also on his public image and international career.

A formal court date has yet to be announced, but legal analysts anticipate that proceedings will begin in the coming months.

There has been no immediate public comment from Partey or his legal representatives at the time of this report.

It remains unclear whether he intends to contest the charges or pursue a plea deal.

Back in Ghana, the news has ignited intense public debate, with many expressing shock, disappointment, and concern.
As a prominent member of the Black Stars, Partey has long been viewed as a role model for aspiring footballers, with his journey from Ghana’s youth leagues to Europe’s top-flight football often cited as a success story.

However, with these serious criminal charges now in motion, both his career and legacy face an uncertain future.
