The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), has issued a formal response following the circulation of a viral video that captured a physical altercation between a member of the university’s Dress Code Compliance Team and a female Level 100 student.

The incident, which unfolded on campus, sparked widespread public concern after the footage was widely shared across social media platforms.

The University, in a statement dated July 3, 2025, acknowledged the seriousness of the matter and confirmed that immediate steps were taken by management to investigate the situation.

The university has since condemned the staff member’s conduct, describing it as “unacceptable” and contrary to the institution’s core values of integrity, respect, and service.

According to the statement, UPSA Vice-Chancellor personally reached out to the affected student to offer an unreserved apology, reiterating the university’s commitment to ensuring that all students are treated with dignity and professionalism.

The officer involved in the incident has also issued a written apology, admitting fault and expressing remorse for his actions.

The student, in turn, has communicated her own regret to university management over the exchange, highlighting efforts from both sides to bring closure to the unfortunate encounter.

Beyond the apologies, UPSA announced a review of its internal dress code enforcement protocols, which will include retraining for members of the Dress Code Compliance Team.

The goal, according to the statement, is to guarantee that future engagements between staff and students are handled with civility, professionalism, and respect for due process.

UPSA’s dress code policy, the university emphasized, is a foundational element of its broader educational philosophy.

It is designed to prepare students for professional and corporate environments and is clearly outlined in the Student Handbook.

The university noted that adherence to the dress code is a condition all students agree to upon enrollment.

“While we continue to uphold discipline and professionalism as key pillars of our academic community, we must ensure enforcement is always guided by empathy, respect, and procedural fairness,” the statement read.

UPSA took the opportunity to reaffirm its commitment to a safe and respectful campus environment, assuring students, parents, and the general public that the incident has been addressed comprehensively.
