In a renewed effort to clamp down on the proliferation of narcotics and drug-related crimes, the Volta Regional Police Command has arrested twenty-six individuals in a sweeping intelligence-led operation conducted on May 24, 2025.
The operation, targeted at the Aflao Border enclave—one of the busiest and most porous entry points—forms part of a broader campaign to dismantle drug distribution networks in the region.
According to a press statement signed by DSP Felix Danku of the Public Affairs Unit, the suspects were apprehended at various locations within and around the Aflao border zone.
The coordinated swoop was informed by actionable intelligence gathered over a period of surveillance, underscoring the Police Service’s commitment to rooting out narcotics-related crimes from the region.
A significant cache of illicit substances and paraphernalia was recovered during the operation.
These included twenty (20) wraps of substances suspected to be Indian hemp, twelve (12) sachets of Tramadol tablets, a quantity of dried leaves believed to be Indian hemp contained in a rubber bucket, and twenty-six (26) compressed parcels of suspected Indian hemp hidden in a fertilizer sack.
Additionally, the police seized six (6) drug-laced toffees and eight (8) creams suspected to contain narcotic elements.
In what police officials believe points to commercial-scale operations, large sums of money were also retrieved from the suspects.
These included GHC 30,558.00 in local currency and 17,500 CFA in foreign notes—raising concerns about potential cross-border drug trafficking syndicates exploiting the Ghana-Togo border.
The suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to be arraigned before court in the coming days to face charges related to possession, distribution, and possible trafficking of illicit drugs.
