In a significant move to modernize the military capabilities, Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson announced during the 2026 Budget reading that the government will procure four new helicopters for the Ghana Air Force, along with two additional aircraft.

The decision forms part of a broader retooling and re-equipping programme for the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), aimed at enhancing operational readiness, emergency response, and border security.

The initiative is framed as a continuation of previous modernization efforts and pays tribute to the late Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, former Minister for Defense whose visionary strategies laid the groundwork for upgrading the country’s defense capabilities.

Under the new programme, the helicopters will primarily be deployed for airlift operations, rapid deployment of troops, medical evacuations, disaster response, and surveillance missions, especially along the borders and maritime zones.

The Minister said the additional two aircraft will further expand air mobility and logistical support, enabling faster and more coordinated responses to emergencies across the country.

Beyond aerial assets, the retooling programme encompasses comprehensive upgrades across all branches of the Armed Forces, including modernized communications equipment, surveillance systems, and training infrastructure.

The government has emphasized that these enhancements are crucial to maintaining operational effectiveness, strengthening national security, and supporting the contribution to regional peacekeeping efforts.
