Asiedu Nketiah Exit Rumours Shake NDC As Questions Mount Over Party’s Future Leadership

Reports suggesting that National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, popularly known as “General Mosquito,” may not seek another term as chairman have triggered intense political debate within the governing party, although no official announcement has yet been made.

The reports, which have circulated widely on social media and online platforms, claim that Asiedu Nketiah has decided not to contest the party’s next national executive elections, a development that, if confirmed, would mark the end of an era for one of the NDC’s longest-serving and most influential political figures.

While the reports remain unconfirmed by the NDC leadership, they have already generated widespread discussion among party supporters, political observers and analysts over the possible implications for the party’s future leadership and preparations toward the 2028 general elections.

Asiedu Nketiah has remained one of the most recognizable faces of the NDC for more than two decades.

Before becoming National Chairman, he served as the party’s General Secretary, where he earned a reputation as one of the party’s principal strategists, grassroots mobilizers and election campaign coordinators.

His influence within the party grew steadily over the years, earning him the nickname “General Mosquito,” a title that has become synonymous with his aggressive political style and organizational abilities.

After assuming office as National Chairman, Asiedu Nketiah played a central role in reorganizing the party following its defeat in the 2020 general elections. Under his leadership, the NDC embarked on extensive restructuring, culminating in the party’s return to power in the 2024 elections under President John Dramani Mahama.

In recent months, however, Asiedu Nketiah has found himself at the center of several internal controversies.

His nationwide “Thank You Tour” has attracted criticism from sections of the party who questioned the timing of the exercise, particularly because it coincided with President Mahama’s nationwide “Reset Tour.”

The situation generated speculation about possible succession politics within the NDC, especially after Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu publicly referred to President Mahama’s engagements as the “proper thank you tour,” comments many political observers interpreted as an indirect response to the chairman’s activities.

Asiedu Nketiah also reignited internal debate after publicly revealing that he championed the controversial 2023 reshuffle of the Minority leadership in Parliament, insisting the removal of Haruna Iddrisu and Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak helped position the NDC for victory in the 2024 elections.

Those remarks drew criticism from supporters of both ministers, while former Kumbungu MP Mohammed Ras Mubarak accused the chairman of displaying dictatorial tendencies and attempting to combine the roles of referee and player by allegedly positioning himself for a future presidential bid while serving as National Chairman.

The growing public exchanges prompted the NDC Council of Elders to issue a formal directive cautioning party members against engaging in premature presidential campaign activities ahead of the expected 2027 presidential primaries.

Against this backdrop, reports that Asiedu Nketiah may now be preparing to step aside as National Chairman have intensified discussions about who could lead the party into its next phase.

It’s believe that if the reports prove accurate, the race to succeed him is likely to become one of the most fiercely contested internal elections in the NDC’s history.

Several influential personalities are already being mentioned in political circles as possible contenders for senior leadership positions within the party as preparations gradually begin for both the party’s internal elections and the post-Mahama era.

Supporters of Asiedu Nketiah have praised his contribution to rebuilding the NDC after periods in opposition, describing him as one of the architects of the party’s return to government.

Others, however, believe a leadership transition could provide an opportunity for generational renewal and fresh ideas as the governing party prepares for future electoral contests
