Third-Term Bunkum. Dare Not!

We had cause to express an opinion on the issue of abusing the constitutional term limit for presidents in this country recently. The commentary was provoked by a certain so-called Man of God who claimed he had a vision that the President should consider that outrageous and dangerous option.

As the lead story in our Monday edition suggests, the perilous project is being hatched by a few persons in the NDC and some bought men in cassocks. Such jokers and mischievous boot lickers are testing the waters and dangerously so.

If that nonsense is being plied in other jurisdictions in the sub-region let it be told such persons and those pushing them to do their bidding that Ghana is not Gabon, Cote d’Ivoire or even Togo.

We have a history of not allowing dictators to be nurtured on our political landscape. What exactly do such persons want for this country that they would want to encourage a breach of the constitution?

Our magna carta which spells out how the country should be run states unambiguously the presidential term limit and so whoever seeks to breach this should be regarded as being on a warpath with the country and would definitely fail.

Ghanaians are very observant and would react at the appropriate time when their patience is stretched beyond its seam.

We recall when this subject was thrown into the political space and the assortment reactions it engendered all of which were anything but supportive. The President was silent for a long time.

A bishop with an inclination towards the President remarked that four years is too short for a head of state to undertake transformative ventures as part of the developing narrative. The subtle way of asking for more years for the president was evident. Of course he endured adequate flak from the public.

He has recoiled into his cocoon since then. Eventually the President who appeared to have observed the goings-on regarding the subject eventually put paid to the uncertainty when he categorically said that he has no intention of seeking an alteration to the constitutional term limit.

Now within the NDC itself some persons want to try out the patience of Ghanaians once more by throwing the subject into the public space. Is that the reason behind ‘resetting the judiciary?’

Ghanaians are quick to react to things they dislike but when push gets to shove, their reactions can be enormous. Kwame Nkrumah once made this observation. It holds true then as it is today.

Here is to tell those behind this project that it would not fly and they had better forgotten it before they are humiliated badly in the public space.

We expect the president to stop them before the gossips that he is behind it gains traction.

With his vacillation record vivid in our memories we do not want to believe that his earlier statement that he has no such ambition is something he can easily renege upon just as he did with other issues he promised he would not do yet he did. Let him not try this destabilization option.
