The Food and Drugs Authority has intensified regulatory checks on imported frozen chicken, meat and fish as part of renewed efforts to strengthen food safety standards and protect consumers from unsafe products entering the Ghanaian market.
The latest measures come amid increasing national concerns over food safety, including recent public discussions surrounding restrictions on the sale and consumption of “chofi” in some parts of the country.
According to the Authority, the enhanced monitoring exercise forms part of stricter enforcement strategies aimed at tightening oversight of frozen food imports and ensuring that imported products meet internationally accepted hygiene and safety standards before they reach consumers.
As part of the initiative, the FDA has begun engaging importers of frozen chicken, meat and fish on mandatory site verification procedures intended to trace and inspect the origins of imported food products.
Officials explained that the verification process would enable regulators to confirm whether frozen products being imported into Ghana are sourced from properly certified and hygienic production facilities abroad.
The inspections are expected to assess compliance with international food safety requirements, particularly in relation to production methods, storage conditions, handling procedures and transportation standards before shipment to Ghana.
The Authority says the renewed enforcement drive is aimed at closing regulatory gaps within the frozen food supply chain while reducing potential public health risks associated with contaminated or substandard imported food products.
Food safety concerns surrounding imported frozen foods have periodically generated public debate in Ghana over the years, particularly regarding preservation methods, cold chain management and the quality of some imported meat and poultry products sold on local markets.
The recent national discussions over “chofi” and other food safety issues have further heightened calls for stronger inspections and more aggressive regulatory enforcement within the food industry.
The FDA stressed that protecting public health remains central to its mandate and indicated that the current exercise forms part of broader efforts to strengthen consumer confidence in food products available on the market.
The Authority also assured the public that it would continue collaborating with importers, distributors and industry stakeholders to improve compliance and ensure that only safe and high-quality frozen foods are imported into the country.
Over the years, the food regulatory agencies have intensified efforts to monitor both locally produced and imported food products amid growing concerns over public health, food contamination and standards enforcement.
