12 Killed In Fatal Nkenkensu Highway Crash

News Desk Report

At least 12 people have lost their lives while two others are battling for survival following a horrific road accident at Nkenkensu in the Offinso North District of the Ashanti Region.

The fatal crash, which occurred on Tuesday afternoon, involved a commercial passenger mini-bus travelling from Kumasi to Techiman and a trailer truck heading in the opposite direction from Techiman towards Kumasi.

According to eyewitnesses, the accident happened after the driver of the commercial vehicle allegedly attempted a dangerous overtaking maneuver but suddenly veered into the lane of the oncoming trailer, resulting in a head-on collision.

The impact of the crash reportedly left the mini-bus severely mangled, trapping several passengers inside.

Medical officials at the Nkenkensu Government Hospital confirmed that 12 victims were pronounced dead on arrival, while two survivors who sustained severe injuries are currently receiving emergency treatment in critical condition.

An eyewitness identified only as Eric, who spoke to Adom News, disclosed that the accident occurred around 2:00 p.m. but emergency response efforts were delayed.

According to him, it took more than an hour before an ambulance arrived at the scene to transport the injured victims to the hospital.

The bodies of the deceased have since been deposited at the Nkenkensu Government Hospital morgue pending identification and preservation, while the wrecked vehicles have been cleared from the highway to restore the free flow of traffic.

Police have meanwhile launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident as concerns continue to grow over reckless overtaking and increasing road crashes on major highways across the country.
