Broadcaster and media personality Blessed Godsbrain Smart, popularly known as Captain Smart, has encountered an unexpected challenge to his reported political ambitions after the Gomoa West Constituency branch of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) publicly declared that it has no official records identifying him as a registered member of the party.
The development follows recent public discussions triggered by comments reportedly made by the outspoken broadcaster on his radio programme, where he suggested he could contest for the Gomoa West parliamentary seat in the future.
However, in a strongly-worded statement issued on June 8, 2026, the Gomoa West Constituency Executive Committee of the NDC distanced itself from claims that Captain Smart is a member of the party within the constituency and questioned suggestions that he could be preparing to contest on the NDC ticket.
The statement, signed by Constituency Secretary Benedict Kofi Wompeh following a duly constituted meeting of the constituency executive committee held on June 7, stated that party officials had reviewed the matter and found no evidence to support claims of Captain Smart’s formal affiliation with the constituency branch of the NDC.
According to the committee, an examination of the constituency’s official records revealed that Blessed Godsbrain Smart is not listed as a legitimately registered member of the NDC within the Gomoa West Constituency.
The committee further stated that it could not identify any record of his participation in branch meetings, party events, campaigns, advocacy programmes, or other organizational activities undertaken by the party in the constituency over the years.
“As a result, the Constituency Executive Committee is unable to verify or authenticate claims suggesting any formal association with the Party at the constituency level,” the statement noted.
The committee also raised questions about Captain Smart’s political identity, pointing out that he has over the years publicly associated himself with political traditions outside the NDC.
According to the statement, the broadcaster has at various times identified with ideologies and traditions linked to both the Convention People’s Party (CPP) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
While acknowledging that every Ghanaian has a constitutional right to political association and affiliation, the constituency executives stressed that consistency and clarity regarding political identity are important elements in preserving the integrity of the party’s structures and internal processes.
The Gomoa West executives also used the opportunity to remind party members and the general public that membership of the NDC is governed by clearly defined constitutional provisions, rules, and procedures.
The statement emphasized that individuals seeking to participate in the party’s internal electoral processes must satisfy all requirements outlined under the NDC Constitution and comply with established regulations governing eligibility.
Beyond the membership issue, the constituency executives pointed out that discussions regarding parliamentary candidacies are premature because the party has not yet opened nominations for parliamentary primary in any constituency across the country.
The committee stressed that no official process currently exists for selecting parliamentary candidates for the 2028 general elections and that any conversations regarding prospective candidacies remain outside the party’s immediate agenda.
According to the executives, the NDC’s current priority is supporting the administration of President John Dramani Mahama in implementing its development agenda and consolidating the gains achieved since returning to power.
The statement further emphasized that while the NDC remains an inclusive and democratic political organization that welcomes individuals who genuinely subscribe to its principles and vision, participation in party affairs must be guided by honesty, respect for party structures, and adherence to due process.
The committee therefore called on branch executives, party members, sympathizers, and supporters to remain focused on strengthening the party’s grassroots structures and avoid distractions that could undermine party unity and cohesion.
