Former Ghana international Godwin Attram has officially begun his new role as assistant coach of the Black Stars, joining Carlos Queiroz and the national team’s technical staff as preparations intensify for Ghana’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
The Ghana Football Association announced Attram’s appointment on Monday, September 21, as part of a restructuring of the Black Stars technical team. He replaces Desmond Ofei, who is now expected to concentrate fully on his responsibilities as head coach of the Black Meteors, Ghana’s U-23 national team.
Attram wasted no time settling into his new position, joining Queiroz and the rest of the technical team for the Black Stars’ first training session on Monday evening ahead of their crucial opening AFCON qualifier against Côte d’Ivoire.
His appointment brings a former Black Stars player into the coaching setup at a critical stage for the national team. Attram has experience of Ghana’s football environment as both a former international and coach, and his immediate task will be to work alongside Queiroz as the team prepares for a demanding qualifying campaign.
The timing of the technical change adds further significance to Thursday’s clash in Bouaké. Ghana are beginning their attempt to return to the Africa Cup of Nations after missing the 2025 tournament in Morocco, while Côte d’Ivoire represent one of the strongest opponents they could face at the start of the campaign.
The Black Stars will subsequently return home to face The Gambia, giving Attram and Queiroz two competitive fixtures in which to assess the squad and establish the tactical direction of the team.
