Somali referee Omar Artan has turned a major disappointment into a landmark moment for African football after becoming the first African match official to take charge of a UEFA fixture, following his appointment for the UEFA Super Cup clash between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa.
Artan officiated the prestigious European encounter on Wednesday, August 11, 2026, marking a significant milestone in a refereeing career that has increasingly placed him among Africa’s leading officials.
The historic assignment came only weeks after Artan experienced the disappointment of missing the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America after being denied entry into the United States. His absence from the tournament was a major setback for the Somali official, who had established himself as one of the continent’s top referees.
Rather than allowing the setback to define his year, Artan received another major opportunity on the international stage when UEFA entrusted him with the Super Cup assignment.
The appointment placed him at the centre of a high-profile European fixture involving two prominent clubs and provided an opportunity to demonstrate his abilities before a global audience.
The assignment was particularly significant because it broke new ground for African refereeing. Artan became the first African referee to officiate a UEFA match, creating a historic link between African and European football officiating.
For the Somali referee, the occasion carried a deeply personal meaning because it came after the frustration of being unable to participate in the World Cup.
Reflecting on the experience after the match, Artan wrote a message on the official match ball expressing his appreciation to UEFA and describing the assignment as his own World Cup.
“It was my World Cup. Thank you, UEFA. You have truly made my life better forever,” Artan wrote.
The message captured the significance of the opportunity for Artan, who had seen his World Cup hopes disappear after he was denied entry into the United States.
His UEFA Super Cup appearance therefore provided a remarkable response to that setback, giving him the opportunity to officiate at one of European football’s major occasions while simultaneously creating history for the continent.
Artan’s achievement also represents a major moment for Somali football. His rise through international refereeing has placed Somalia on the global football map and demonstrated the increasing recognition of African officials beyond the continent’s traditional competitions.
The assignment further strengthens Artan’s reputation as one of Africa’s leading referees. His historic UEFA appearance comes as another major achievement in a career that has already earned him recognition as the continent’s reigning best referee.
