The banking and insurance sectors have been thrown into mourning following the reported death of Patience Enyonam Akyianu, a prominent business executive who served as Managing Director of Barclays Bank Ghana and later became the Group Chief Executive Officer of Hollard Ghana.
Her reported passing marks the loss of one of the country’s notable figures in financial services, having built a career spanning more than two decades and held senior leadership positions in both banking and insurance.
The circumstances surrounding her reported death had not been independently confirmed at the time of the report.
However, the CEO Network Ghana confirmed her demise in a statement, describing her as a “dear friend and distinguished CEO” and expressing condolences to her family, colleagues, friends and loved ones.
“It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear friend and distinguished CEO, Patience Akyianu, Group CEO of Hollard Holdings,” the organisation said.
It added that her death was “a deeply painful loss to the business community and to all of us who knew and cherished her,” while indicating that further details would be released as they became available from the family.
Akyianu held senior financial and executive positions at Barclays Bank Ghana, including serving as Finance Director before eventually becoming the bank’s Managing Director.
She spent five years as Managing Director, leading the institution during an important period in Ghana’s financial services sector.
According to a professional profile published by the Ghana Stock Exchange, Akyianu had more than 26 years of experience in banking and finance, including 17 years in the banking industry before moving into insurance in 2018.
Her academic background was in finance and business administration. She obtained an MBA in Finance and a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, specialising in Accounting, from the University of Ghana Business School.
She was also a certified professional accountant and a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana.
In October 2018, Akyianu left Barclays Bank Ghana to take up the position of Chief Executive Officer of Hollard Ghana Holdings.
She became the first Group CEO of the newly established insurance group and was tasked with steering its growth and strengthening its position in Ghana’s competitive insurance market.
Reflecting on the transition in 2021, Akyianu described it as a “leap of faith”, explaining that she was attracted by Hollard’s brand, purpose, vision and business ethos.
Akyianu’s career also earned her a number of professional recognitions. In May 2025, she received the Millennium Excellence Award for Finance and Capital Market Excellence at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.
The award recognised her leadership roles at Barclays Bank Ghana and Hollard Ghana, as well as her contribution to finance and capital markets.
She served on corporate boards and was a founding member of the Executive Women Network as well as the International Women’s Forum, Ghana.
Through these platforms, she was involved in initiatives aimed at advancing professional leadership, particularly among women in the corporate environment.
