The Ashanti Regional Police Command has arrested three Nigerians suspected of belonging to a criminal syndicate allegedly responsible for a series of robberies targeting bank customers in Kumasi and surrounding communities.
The arrests followed an intelligence-led operation conducted by an IGP’s Special Team comprising personnel from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters and the Accra Regional Police Intelligence Directorate.
In a press statement issued on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, and signed by the Head of the Ashanti Regional Police Public Affairs Unit, Superintendent Godwin Ahianyo, the Command said the operation was carried out on October 31, 2026, at about 11:30 a.m.
The first two suspects, identified as 30-year-old Aboy Promise and 45-year-old Favour Uwalaka, were arrested at a hotel in Moshie Zongo, Kumasi.
A search conducted in their hotel rooms led to the recovery of GH¢1,600 in cash, assorted mobile phones, a Royal motorbike and a master key believed to have been used to gain unauthorised access to vehicles belonging to bank customers.
According to the police, preliminary investigations suggest that the suspects operated as part of a criminal network that monitored banking premises, identified customers who withdrew substantial amounts of money and followed them before attacking and robbing them.
The syndicate is also suspected of targeting vehicles belonging to bank customers, particularly those left unattended, using a master key to gain access and steal cash and other valuables kept inside.
Police said the two suspects admitted involvement in the robberies during interrogation and mentioned two alleged accomplices identified only as Chinedu, alias Alhaji, and Kingsley, alias KC.
Their disclosures reportedly led investigators to another hotel at Dechemso, a suburb of Kumasi, where the third suspect, 35-year-old Kingsley, alias KC, was arrested.
The fourth suspect, Chinedu, remains at large, with the police appealing to members of the public to provide credible information that could assist in tracking him down.
The Command has urged anyone with information about his whereabouts to report to the nearest police station.
Suspects linked to GH¢15,000 robbery
The police further disclosed that the arrested suspects admitted to robbing a victim of GH¢15,000 at Asokore Mampong on October 27, 2026, after the victim had withdrawn the money from Kwamang Rural Bank.
They also reportedly admitted involvement in similar robbery incidents at the Atonsu branch of Fidelity Bank, the Ahodwo branch of Access Bank and other locations within Kumasi and its surrounding areas.
The admissions form part of the ongoing investigations into the suspected activities of the group, which allegedly targeted people immediately after they conducted financial transactions at banking institutions.
The three arrested suspects have since been handed over to the Ashanti Regional Police Command and are assisting investigators with their inquiries.
Police caution bank customers
Following the arrests, the Ashanti Regional Police Command has cautioned bank customers to remain vigilant and pay attention to suspicious individuals around banking premises.
Although three suspects are in police custody, the search for the alleged accomplice still at large remains ongoing as investigators work to establish the full extent of the syndicate’s activities and identify other persons who may have been involved.
The police have not indicated that the suspects have been convicted, and investigations are continuing.
