Fire Razes Kwadaso SDA Nursing College Hostel

A devastating fire outbreak on Sunday, April 20, 2025, gutted the top floor of a two-storey hostel at the Kwadaso SDA Nursing and Midwifery Training College in the Ashanti Region, rendering more than 150 students homeless and destroying their personal belongings.

The incident occurred around 5pm, sending panic among residents and students in the Kwadaso Municipality.

Eye-witness accounts from some students indicate that the fire began suddenly and quickly spread through the upper floor of the building, consuming items including mattresses, laptops, textbooks, provisions, and other essential personal effects.

Fortunately, there were no casualties reported.

According to school authorities, most of the students had left campus earlier for the Easter holidays, a stroke of luck that helped avert potential injury or loss of life.

The swift response from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) was instrumental in containing the blaze before it could spread to the lower floor of the hostel or adjacent structures.

Though the GNFS managed to prevent further destruction, the damage to property is extensive.

The affected students, upon their return to campus, are expected to find their rooms completely destroyed and their possessions reduced to ashes.

Investigations into the cause of the fire have commenced, but officials from the GNFS are yet to identify the source.

The Kwadaso SDA Nursing and Midwifery Training College is one of the key health training institutions in the Ashanti Region, known for producing qualified nurses and midwives who serve in healthcare facilities nationwide.

This disaster, therefore, not only impacts the students’ welfare but also threatens to disrupt academic activities if urgent remedial measures are not taken.

School authorities are expected to meet with regional education and health officials in the coming days to assess the damage and formulate a plan for temporary accommodation and support for the affected students.
