The Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Samuel Kwabena Awuku, has added another postgraduate qualification to his academic record after earning a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in International Energy Law, a development he says will deepen his understanding of the energy sector and strengthen his contribution to parliamentary business.
Mr Sammi Awuku announced the achievement in a social media post, describing it as another milestone in his continuous pursuit of knowledge and personal development.
He expressed gratitude to God for the accomplishment, noting that the qualification represents more than an academic distinction, as it is expected to provide him with additional knowledge and perspectives relevant to his responsibilities as a legislator.
According to the MP, his newly acquired expertise will enrich his thoughts, improve his understanding of energy-related issues and equip him to make more informed contributions to discussions and decisions concerning Ghana’s energy sector.
His latest academic achievement adds to an educational background that spans political science, psychology, law, international relations and public leadership.
Born on April 10, 1984, in Koforidua in the Eastern Region, Mr Awuku began his basic education at Nana Kwaku Boateng Experimental School before proceeding to St. Augustine’s College in Cape Coast for his secondary education.
He later attended the University of Ghana, where he studied Political Science and Psychology. His interest in law and governance subsequently led him to pursue legal studies through the University of London, from which he obtained a Diploma in Law.
His academic development also includes studies in international relations at the Freie Universität Berlin in Germany, as well as executive education in public leadership at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government in the United States.
He has further undertaken postgraduate and professional training in public administration, advertising, marketing and public relations through the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) and the Ghana Institute of Journalism.
From Student Activism To National Political Leadership
Beyond his academic pursuits, Mr Awuku has built a political career spanning party organisation, youth mobilisation, public administration and parliamentary representation.
He served as Deputy Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) between 2011 and 2013 before becoming National Organiser from 2014 to 2018. He subsequently served as National Youth Organiser from 2018 to 2022, a period during which he became one of the party’s prominent youth mobilisation figures.
His political activities also extended to international platforms. He served as Vice Chairman of the International Young Democrats Union between 2014 and 2017 and was recognised by the All African Students Union as a Continental Youth Icon. In 2014, he was also named among 50 rising African personalities by Paris-based Africa Report magazine.
His public service experience includes serving as Board Chairman of the Youth Employment Agency from 2017 to 2021. In 2021, he was appointed Director-General of the National Lottery Authority, a position he held until 2025.
During his tenure at the NLA, he was recognised as Overall Public Sector CEO of the Year in 2022 and 2023, according to his published biography.
Parliamentary Responsibilities
Mr Awuku entered Parliament on January 7, 2025, after winning the Akuapem North parliamentary seat in the 2024 general elections, succeeding Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah-Adjei.
His latest qualification in International Energy Law is particularly relevant to an important area of national policy, given the legal, regulatory, commercial and international dimensions of Ghana’s energy industry.
The sector continues to feature prominently in national discussions on electricity generation, petroleum resources, energy security, tariffs, investment and the sustainability of power supply.
Mr Sammi Awuku has indicated that the knowledge gained will inform his parliamentary work and strengthen the quality of his contributions to energy-sector discussions.
