GJA Elections Committee Dismisses Fake Voters’ Register Ahead Of Polls

By Daniel Bampoe

As preparations intensify for the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) National and Regional Elections scheduled for Monday, June 30, 2025, the GJA Elections Committee has issued a firm statement debunking a fake voters’ register currently circulating on social media.

The committee has described the list as a deliberate attempt to mislead members and cast doubt on the integrity of the association’s electoral process.

In a statement released on Sunday, June 29, the Elections Committee expressed grave concern over what it termed a “mischievous fabrication” intended to sow confusion and undermine the credibility of the election.

The committee urged members to disregard the fraudulent list and rely only on the official voters’ register, which has been duly endorsed by the GJA General Secretary and Treasurer.

Official Verification Channels

To maintain transparency and trust, the committee has directed all members who are unsure about their eligibility to verify their names through the GJA’s official website or by contacting the Elections Committee directly.

The reassurance comes amid increasing scrutiny over the fairness and preparedness of the voting process, especially given the high-profile contests expected in this year’s elections.

More than 800 journalists in good standing are expected to vote in what has been described as one of the most competitive elections in the association’s history.

The race for the National President slot, in particular, has drawn significant attention, with incumbent Albert Kwabena Dwumfour facing off against Charles Yao Mawusi, who is not well known in the media fraternity.

Security Measures and Voter ID Requirements

In response to concerns about possible disruption on election day, the GJA Elections Committee announced that the Ghana Police Service will be deployed across all regional voting centres to ensure peace, safety, and order.

“Any person or group attempting to disrupt the process will be swiftly removed from the premises by the police,” the committee warned.

Additionally, the committee reminded members that only individuals with valid identification will be permitted to vote.

Accepted forms of identification include the Ghana Card, Voter ID, or a Ghanaian Passport.

This is part of measures aimed at preventing impersonation and ensuring that only duly registered members participate in the elections.

Call for Unity

The statement concluded with a patriotic appeal to all members of the association to prioritize the credibility of the election and support the democratic process.

“Let us all work together to ensure a peaceful and credible election. May the best candidates win – and may the GJA be the ultimate winner,” the committee noted.

This year’s elections come at a crucial time for the GJA, as the association works to restore public trust, safeguard press freedom, and improve the welfare of journalists across Ghana.

The stakes are high, and the Elections Committee’s timely intervention on the fake voters’ list underscores the tension and scrutiny surrounding the vote.
