Agona Abodom Chieftaincy Turn Bloody As Four Gunned Down, 10 Injured

What began as a traditional celebration in Agona Abodom ended in bloodshed and destruction after a long-standing chieftaincy dispute flared into violence on Friday, August 1.

The fatal clash has claimed the lives of four individuals and left ten others critically injured, sending shockwaves through the Agona West Municipality in Ghana’s Central Region.

According to eyewitnesses and preliminary reports, chaos erupted when armed men suspected to be landguards—believed to be acting on behalf of a rival claimant to the Abodom stool—stormed the town in the middle of the annual Akwanbo Festival, a significant cultural event among the people of Agona Abodom.

The invaders reportedly targeted the chief’s palace, destroying furniture, tables, and chairs.

Two vehicles and other properties were also set ablaze or vandalized in what residents described as an unprovoked attack aimed at destabilizing the festival and undermining the legitimacy of the current traditional leadership.

45 Years of Disputed Leadership

The town of Agona Abodom, largely a farming community, has endured a turbulent 45-year history of unresolved chieftaincy disputes.

The conflict, often rooted in competing royal lineages and questions over rightful succession, seemed to have calmed earlier this year when a new chief was installed to bring an end to decades of uncertainty and factionalism.

However, tensions simmered below the surface, with rival factions reportedly regrouping and bidding their time.

Friday’s violence appears to be the most dramatic fallout yet from the unresolved power struggle.

Speaking to Adom News, an eyewitness, Kwame Arhin, revealed that three people were initially confirmed dead, with a fourth body later discovered, intensifying the gravity of the situation.

Community in Fear

The aftermath has left residents terrified, with many now calling for the immediate deployment of military personnel to reinforce the police presence.

Police have since been stationed in the area, but local leaders fear the situation may spiral further if stronger measures are not taken.

As of Saturday evening, no arrests had been officially confirmed.

Meanwhile, families of the deceased are mourning their loved ones, and the injured are receiving treatment at nearby health facilities.

The violence has cast a dark shadow over what should have been a moment of cultural pride and unity for the people of Abodom.
