Ghana has officially launched preparations for the 24th edition of the African Senior Athletics Championships, with Accra set to host the prestigious continental event for the first time in history.
The launch, held on Wednesday, signals the beginning of a major sporting moment for the country as it prepares to welcome Africa’s elite track and field athletes in May 2026.
The championship, scheduled to run from May 12 to May 17, 2026, will take place at the University of Ghana Stadium, a facility expected to take centre stage as Ghana showcases its readiness to host top-tier international competitions.
Ghana Targets Landmark Hosting Opportunity
This marks a significant milestone for Ghana, which has never hosted the African Senior Athletics Championships since the competition’s inception.
The event is expected to bring together some of the continent’s biggest athletics stars, including Botswana’s sprint sensation Letsile Tebogo and Kenya’s long-distance icons Faith Kipyegon and Beatrice Chebet.
Their participation is anticipated to elevate the profile of the competition while providing Ghanaian athletes and fans with a rare opportunity to witness world-class performances on home soil.
Government Push for Athletics Development
Speaking at the official launch, Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, emphasized the need for sustained investment in athletics infrastructure nationwide.
He noted that while the upcoming championship presents a moment of pride, it also highlights longstanding challenges facing the sport in the country.
According to the Minister, several regions in Ghana still lack standard running tracks, limiting opportunities for young athletes to develop their talents.
He stressed that hosting the championship should serve as a catalyst for long-term investment and structural improvement in athletics.
He further underscored the importance of exposing young Ghanaian athletes to elite competition, arguing that witnessing top performers firsthand could inspire the next generation to pursue excellence in the sport.
Inspiring A New Generation
Beyond the competition itself, Accra 2026 is being positioned as a developmental platform aimed at motivating emerging athletes across the country. Officials believe that the presence of Africa’s best will ignite interest in athletics, particularly among the youth, while reinforcing Ghana’s commitment to sports development.
The championship is also expected to test the organizational capacity and highlight improvements in sports infrastructure, as authorities aim to deliver a successful and memorable event on the continental stage.
Building Momentum For Ghanaian Sports
With just weeks to go before the opening ceremony, attention will now shift to final preparations, including facility readiness, athlete accommodation, and logistical arrangements.
The successful hosting of the event could strengthen the bid for future international competitions and further position the country as a hub for sports in West Africa.
