Amadu Mohammed Eyes $20,000 Jackpot As Ghanaian Boxer Faces Zambia In African Championship Final

By Issah Olegor

Ghanaian boxer Amadu Mohammed is just one victory away from securing continental glory and a lucrative $20,000 prize after booking his place in the men’s featherweight final at the 2026 International Boxing Association (IBA) Elite Africa Men’s and Women’s Boxing Championship in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Sea View Boxing Gym representative was facing Zambia’s Mwengo Mwale in the -57kg final on Saturday, October 31, with both boxers battling for the gold medal and the biggest financial reward at stake in the competition. For Mohammed, the encounter presented an opportunity to repeat his previous triumph over the Zambian boxer and establish himself among Africa’s leading amateur boxing talents.

Mohammed Targets Second Victory Over Mwale

The final will revive memories of their previous meeting at the 2023 African Games in Accra, where Mohammed defeated Mwale by second-round technical knockout.

That victory came in the bantamweight division at -54kg, making Saturday’s contest their first reported meeting in a different weight category.

Mohammed will be hoping to maintain his winning record against the Zambian and finish the championship with the gold medal.

The Ghanaian southpaw is expected to rely on his punching power, aggression and ability to pressure opponents, while Mwale could look to use his footwork and attacking approach to disrupt Mohammed’s rhythm. The tactical battle between the two fighters could prove decisive in determining who walks away with the continental title.

Beyond the prestige of winning the African championship, the final carries a significant financial incentive.
The gold medallist will receive $20,000, while the silver medallist will take home $10,000. Each bronze medallist is also guaranteed a cash prize of $5,000.
