Otto Addo Drags GFA To FIFA Over $750,000 Unpaid Salaries

BY NADIA NTIAMOAH

Former Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has reportedly taken the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to FIFA over outstanding financial obligations following the termination of his contract in March 2026, with the former Ghana manager seeking more than $750,000 in unpaid salaries, bonuses and other contractual entitlements.

The reported complaint has opened another chapter in the strained relationship between the former coach and the football governing body, months after the GFA abruptly ended his second spell in charge of the national team following a disappointing run of results.

According to Joy Sports, Addo is demanding approximately 15 months of unpaid wages, in addition to other benefits provided for under his employment agreement with the association.

The former coach is understood to have earned a monthly salary of $50,000, meaning the reported 15-month salary arrears alone amount to approximately $750,000, excluding bonuses and other contractual payments.

The GFA has yet to publicly respond to the reported FIFA complaint or provide details of its outstanding financial obligations to the former manager.

Dismissal After Austria and Germany Defeats

Addo’s reported decision to seek FIFA’s intervention follows his departure from the Black Stars on March 31, 2026, when the GFA announced the immediate termination of his appointment.

His dismissal came after Ghana suffered consecutive defeats during the March international window, losing 5-1 to Austria in Vienna before falling 2-1 to Germany in Stuttgart.

The results extended Ghana’s losing streak to four matches and intensified criticism of the team’s performances under the German-born Ghanaian tactician.

The timing of the decision also attracted attention because Ghana were preparing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with just 72 days remaining before the tournament.

The Black Stars were expected to face England and other opponents in the group stage, making the coaching change a significant development in the country’s preparations for football’s biggest international competition.

The 50-year-old returned to manage Ghana in March 2024, marking his second appointment after previously serving as head coach between 2022 and 2023.

During his first spell, Addo guided the Black Stars to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where Ghana exited at the group stage.

His return was expected to provide continuity and stability to the national team, but inconsistent performances and disappointing results eventually placed his position under pressure.

The March 2026 dismissal brought his second tenure to an abrupt end, leaving questions about the contractual arrangements governing his departure.
