The Minority Leader in Parliament and Effutu MP, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has hailed the leadership and organizational skills of Frank Annoh-Dompreh, the Minority Chief Whip and MP for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, describing his performance as “exceptional” in navigating parliamentary business and supporting the opposition’s work in the House.
Speaking on Citi TV recently, Afenyo-Markin explained the crucial role of a chief whip, particularly in opposition.
“When you are a Minority Leader, the most powerful person, your right-hand man, who gets you going, is your chief whip,” he said.
He stressed that in the minority, parliamentary leadership can be overwhelmed, making the whip’s organizational abilities indispensable.
Afenyo-Markin singled out Annoh-Dompreh for praise, highlighting his mastery of parliamentary procedures and his ability to coordinate the Minority’s activities.
He also lauded the contribution of Annoh-Dompreh’s deputies, Habib and Jerry, noting that they have grown into key procedural and advocacy roles.
“Without them, you cannot function as a Minority Leader. You need a strong whip who understands. He’s like your national security advisor, your third eye. He can sniff issues, alert you, and guide the strategy,” Afenyo-Markin explained.
The admiration comes against the backdrop of Annoh-Dompreh’s extensive experience in Parliament.
Before the 2024 elections, he served as the Majority Chief Whip under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, gaining a reputation for discipline, organization, and legislative efficiency.
His tenure as Majority Chief Whip established him as a parliamentary strategist, capable of balancing party interests with effective legislative management—a skill he has now translated into his role in opposition.
Alexander Afenyo-Markin also recounted their close political alliance during the 2024 elections.
He personally visited Frank Annoh-Dompreh’s collation centre at Tesano to provide moral support during a tense vote counting process.
He emphasized that Annoh-Dompreh’s victory was widely recognized even by local NDC leaders, despite external pressures, marking him as “unbeatable” in his constituency.
Since the beginning of the 9th Parliament, both MPs have been retained in top leadership positions within the NPP parliamentary caucus, with Afenyo-Markin serving as Minority Leader and Annoh-Dompreh as Minority Chief Whip.
