Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, accompanied by leaders from both sides of Parliament, visited the family home of the late Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Ernest Yaw Kumi, in Tema to mourn and pay their last respects.

The high-powered delegation, including figures from the Majority and Minority caucuses, joined relatives, friends, and constituents in expressing grief over the unexpected passing of the young MP on Monday, July 7.

Dr. Bawumia, visibly shaken, described Ernest Kumi not just as a political ally but as a deeply trusted friend and loyal supporter.

“I am still in shock. He was more than a friend — he was my greatest supporter. No one stood by me like Ernest did,” Bawumia said with emotion as he addressed the family.

According to the former Vice President, he had shared a heartfelt conversation with Kumi just three days before his death and saw no sign of illness or discomfort.

Recounting the moment, he said the news of his passing reached him during a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), throwing the entire room into shock.

“Just this past Friday, I was with him at my house, and we had a good chat. Nothing showed he was unwell. This is a heavy blow,” he added.

Dr. Bawumia and the parliamentary delegation signed a book of condolence opened at the family home and offered words of comfort to Kumi’s grieving relatives.

He pledged his full support to the family as they prepare for the funeral, urging them not to leave him out of any decisions related to the burial.

“This loss is not yours alone. It’s for all of us. Whatever decisions you take, count me in,” he assured the family.

Also present during the visit were Clerk of Parliament Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, party leaders, and MPs.

They offered their collective condolences and spoke fondly of Kumi’s commitment to public service, despite being in Parliament for less than one full term.
