In the wake of one of the nation’s most devastating aviation tragedies, former Minister for Agriculture, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of prominent government officials and military personnel who perished in a helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.
In a solemn statement, Dr. Acheampong mourned the passing of Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, the Minister of Defence; Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovations; Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC); and Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator.
The tragic incident also claimed the lives of Samuel Aboagye, a former parliamentary candidate for Obuasi East, along with three military officers: Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

Dr. Acheampong described the loss as a “profound national tragedy,” noting that the individuals onboard were not only key figures in national governance and security but also dedicated servants of the country.
“Their sudden passing is a profound loss, not only to our government, but to the soul of our nation,” he said.
The helicopter, believed to be on official duty, crashed under still-unclear circumstances.
Investigations have since been launched by the Ghana Armed Forces in collaboration with Ghana cCvil Aviation Authority to determine the cause of the accident.
Dr. Acheampong extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, colleagues of the victims, and the entire nation, which continues to reel from the shock.
“I extend my heartfelt condolences to their families, colleagues, and to every Ghanaian grieving this heartbreaking tragedy. May their souls rest in peace,” the statement concluded.
The tragic crash has sparked a nationwide wave of mourning, with flags flying at half-mast and President Mahama suspending all official activities. Political parties, civil society organizations, and international partners have also begun sending in their tributes to honor the victims’ lives and service.
The helicopter disaster marks one of the darkest days in Ghana’s political and military history, wiping out a group of senior leaders who were known for their commitment to public service and national development.
