Cameroon Sacks Head Coach Days Before AFCON 2025

Cameroon has dismissed its head coach, Marc Brys, just days before the start of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

The decision was announced by the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT) via a strongly worded statement, citing “professional failure”, “inciting players against” the federation, and “subterfuge to evade his professional obligation to hold press conferences”.

Brys, a Belgian coach, was appointed by Cameroon’s Sports Ministry in April 2024 but had a public falling out with FECAFOOT President Samuel Eto’o, leading to his initial dismissal.

However, he was reinstated two days later after Eto’o apologized.

This latest dismissal comes after Cameroon’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, losing 1-0 to DR Congo in the African leg of the Intercontinental Playoffs.

Brys has been replaced by David Pagou, a 56-year-old Cameroonian coach who had previously managed clubs like PWD Bamenda and Coton Sport.

Pagou has named a 28-man squad for the AFCON, notably excluding goalkeeper Andre Onana and midfielder Franck Zambo Anguissa.

Cameroon is drawn in Group F of the AFCON, alongside Gabon, Mozambique, and reigning champions Cote D’Ivoire. The tournament kicks off on December 21 in Morocco.
