Emergency responders are racing against time to rescue persons feared trapped beneath the rubble of a collapsed building at Avenor in North Kaneshie, following another structural disaster that has renewed concerns over building safety during the rainy season.
The incident occurred on Sunday, June 7, 2026, at Avenor in the Industrial Area, opposite the Ashfoam showroom and adjacent to Melcom Plus.
The structure, believed to have been serving both as a residential facility and a mosque, suddenly caved in, trapping occupants and triggering a massive emergency response.
Preliminary reports indicate that parts of the building may still have been under construction at the time of the collapse, although authorities are yet to officially determine the exact cause of the disaster.
Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) were immediately dispatched to the scene after distress calls alerted emergency services. Firefighters from the Circle Fire Station and the National Headquarters were among the first responders to arrive and commence rescue operations.
Providing updates from the scene through the GNFS official Facebook platform, Assistant Divisional Officer Alex King Nartey confirmed that rescue teams had managed to pull two victims alive from the debris.
According to the Fire Service, both victims were rushed to hospital for urgent medical attention, with one reported to be in a very critical condition.
Officials disclosed that one of the rescued individuals was trapped inside a mosque located adjacent to the collapsed structure.
Despite the successful rescue of the two victims, emergency personnel believe additional persons may still be trapped beneath the rubble.
Initial assessments suggest that at least one or two more individuals could remain buried under the collapsed structure, prompting an intensified search and rescue effort.
The Director of Operations of the Ghana National Fire Service is personally supervising the operation as emergency teams continue to comb through the debris in search of survivors.
Heavy-duty equipment has also been requested to support the rescue mission and assist personnel in reaching sections of the collapsed building that remain inaccessible.
Firefighters, security personnel and other emergency responders have continued working around the clock amid difficult conditions in an effort to locate and rescue any remaining victims.
The latest incident comes only days after a similar building collapse at Adenta New Site in Accra during a heavy rainstorm on Wednesday, June 3, 2026.
That tragedy resulted in the death of one person while four others were rescued from the wreckage of a two-storey building that collapsed during the downpour.
The recurrence of building collapses within a short period has raised fresh concerns among residents and safety experts regarding structural integrity, compliance with building regulations, and the impact of persistent rainfall on vulnerable structures.
Authorities are expected to launch investigations to establish the cause of the Avenor collapse and determine whether any breaches of construction standards contributed to the disaster.
As rescue efforts continue, anxious relatives, residents and onlookers remain gathered at the scene hoping for positive news regarding those feared trapped beneath the rubble.
The Ghana National Fire Service has assured the public that every available resource is being deployed to ensure that any survivors are rescued and that the affected area is secured to prevent further casualties.
Further details are expected as the rescue operation progresses and investigators begin assessing the circumstances surrounding the collapse.
