What began as a gesture of solidarity within Ghana’s music industry has ended in refunds and public retreat, after rapper Kwaw Kese announced the cancellation of a GoFundMe campaign he launched in support of Kwesi Arthur, following widespread criticism and the artist’s decision to disassociate himself from the initiative.
The short-lived fundraising effort emerged against the backdrop of the escalating dispute between Kwesi Arthur and his former management, Ground Up Chale, a conflict that has dominated online conversations in recent weeks. Kwesi Arthur had earlier alleged that his former management demanded $150,000 from him for the use of his own images—claims that intensified public debate around contracts, intellectual property, and artist rights in the creative industry.
A fundraiser born out of controversy
In response to the allegations and the growing public sympathy for Kwesi Arthur, Kwaw Kese launched a GoFundMe campaign, believing that collective fan support could provide financial backing to help the younger artiste navigate the dispute. The initiative was framed as a show of unity within the music fraternity and a practical way to offer support beyond social media commentary.
However, the campaign quickly became controversial. Public reaction was mixed, with many questioning the appropriateness of fundraising for an established artiste, while others criticised the lack of clarity around the purpose and structure of the donations.
Kwesi Arthur distances himself
The situation took a decisive turn when Kwesi Arthur publicly distanced himself from the fundraiser, stating that he had no prior knowledge of the campaign and urging his fans and supporters to ignore it.
His response effectively stripped the initiative of legitimacy and shifted public sentiment away from support toward scepticism.
The fundraiser ultimately raised $170, a modest amount that nonetheless became symbolic of the growing discomfort around the effort.
Kwaw Kese’s Explanation
Speaking on Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM, Kwaw Kese defended his intentions, explaining that the campaign was motivated purely by goodwill.
He said he believed that their combined influence and fan base could mobilise financial support to assist Kwesi Arthur during a difficult professional moment.
He maintained that there was no personal or financial motive, stressing that he did not intend to benefit from the donations and that the funds were meant solely for Kwesi Arthur’s support.
Refunds And closure
Following the backlash and Kwesi Arthur’s public rejection of the campaign, Kwaw Kese announced that he would refund all donations, bringing the GoFundMe initiative to an end. The decision effectively closed the chapter on what had become a contentious and uncomfortable episode within the broader controversy surrounding Kwesi Arthur’s dispute with his former management.
