Malcolm-Jamal Warner, the celebrated actor who rose to fame as a child star on the iconic 1980s American sitcom The Cosby Show, has tragically passed away at the age of 54.
His sudden death occurred in Costa Rica and has been attributed to an accidental drowning, according to reports from celebrity news outlet TMZ.
Warner, who endeared himself to millions worldwide as Theodore “Theo” Huxtable, the only son of Cliff and Clair Huxtable on The Cosby Show, died while on a private trip.
While details remain scarce, sources close to the actor confirmed the drowning incident was unintentional and occurred just days after he released a new episode of his podcast.
A Storied Career That Began in the Living Rooms of America
Malcolm-Jamal Warner became a household name during his teenage years, playing the role of Theo from 1984 to 1992.
His performance earned him critical acclaim, including an Emmy nomination, and helped redefine Black family representation on television during a transformative period in American TV history.
After the show ended, Warner continued to make his mark in the entertainment industry.
He starred alongside comedian Eddie Griffin in the 1990s sitcom Malcolm & Eddie, further solidifying his versatility and staying power in Hollywood.
He also made notable contributions to children’s programming, voicing characters in educational shows like The Magic School Bus, which introduced him to a new generation of fans.
In 2015, Warner’s artistic prowess extended into music when he won a Grammy Award for Best Traditional R&B Performance for his collaboration with Robert Glasper and Lalah Hathaway on the song “Jesus Children.”
Recent Projects and Private Life
At the time of his death, Warner had been working on a podcast titled Not All Hood, which explored themes surrounding Black identity, culture, and social issues.
His latest episode was released just three days before the fatal incident in Costa Rica.
Despite his public success, Warner remained intensely private about his personal life.
