Accra giants Accra Hearts of Oak were held to a 1–1 draw by Heart of Lions in a friendly match at the Kpobiman Sports Complex, as both sides sought to maintain match fitness during the ongoing Ghana Premier League break.

The encounter, though unofficial, provided a competitive platform for players to stay sharp amid a temporary halt in domestic football.

Heart of Lions made a bright start to the game, taking an early lead that tested Hearts of Oak’s defensive organization. However, the Phobians responded with composure, gradually asserting control and creating chances. Their persistence paid off when forward Hamza Issah found the equalizer, restoring parity and ensuring the match ended in a stalemate.

The friendly served as more than just a routine exercise. For both clubs, it was an opportunity to maintain tactical rhythm and physical conditioning during an unexpected pause in the league calendar.

Hearts of Oak, in particular, showed glimpses of balance in both attack and defense, as they continue to fine-tune their squad ahead of the league’s return.

League Suspension Following Tragic Incident

The break in Ghana Premier League action follows a somber development that has shaken the football community.

The Ghana Football Association suspended all Match Day 30 fixtures after the tragic death of Dominic Frimpong of Berekum Chelsea.

Frimpong reportedly lost his life following an armed robbery attack on the team’s bus — an incident that has prompted widespread grief and calls for improved security measures for clubs traveling across the country.

The GFA’s Executive Council took the decision to postpone matches as a mark of respect, allowing players, officials, and fans nationwide to mourn and pay tribute.

Football Community In Mourning

The incident has cast a shadow over Ghanaian football, highlighting growing concerns about player safety and welfare beyond the pitch. Clubs and stakeholders have since expressed solidarity with Berekum Chelsea, while tributes continue to pour in for the late Frimpong, whose death has been described as a significant loss to the domestic game.

The pause in league action has therefore served both as a period of reflection and a moment for teams to regroup mentally and physically before competition resumes.

Focus Shifts To League Resumption

The Ghana Premier League is scheduled to resume over the weekend of May 1–4, 2026, with Match Day 31 fixtures set to continue the campaign. For Hearts of Oak and Heart of Lions, the friendly encounter offers a foundation to build upon as they prepare to return to competitive action.
