Two suspects held at the Kadjebi Police Station in the Oti Region escaped lawful custody after launching an assault on a female officer on duty, raising fresh concerns about security lapses within the police detention facilities.
The incident occurred when Lance Corporal Gyapong, the only officer on duty at the time, was reportedly overpowered by the suspects.
According to police sources, the men managed to break through the cell door, physically attacked the officer, and fled the premises.
Following the escape, one of the fugitives was swiftly re-arrested.
However, the second suspect remains at large.
Authorities have since announced a reward of GH¢2,000 for any credible information that will lead to his recapture.
Confirming the incident, the Kadjebi District Police Commander said a manhunt has been launched and assured the public that strenuous efforts are being made to apprehend the fugitive.
The Commander, however, declined to disclose details about the suspects or the nature of the cases for which they were being held, citing operational security.
Meanwhile, Lance Corporal Gyapong, who suffered injuries during the assault, was rushed to the St. Mary Theresa Catholic Hospital in Dodi-Papase, where she is currently receiving medical attention.
Her condition has been described as stable.
