Lawyer Sues GBA Over Young Lawyers Forum Election

BY Daniel Bampoe

A legal dispute has emerged within the legal fraternity after a young lawyer filed a lawsuit challenging the decision of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) to organise fresh elections for the leadership of its Young Lawyers Forum.

The action was initiated by Sandra Frimpong, who has filed a writ and an application for an injunction at the Accra High Court seeking to restrain the GBA from proceeding with elections for the position of Publicity Secretary.

According to court documents filed on March 10, 2026, the applicant, through her lawyer Jennifred Adjei, argues that the decision to organise elections for all executive positions of the Young Lawyers Forum is unfair and unlawful as far as her position is concerned.

Background

The legal challenge stems from developments following the announcement by the GBA’s Elections Committee inviting nominations for executive positions within the Young Lawyers Forum.

Sandra Frimpong maintains that she had already been validly nominated as the sole candidate for the position of Publicity Secretary in 2024, which according to her amounted to an automatic election after the close of nominations.

In her writ before the High Court, she argues that her election by sole candidature gave her a legitimate mandate to serve in the role until 2027, unless lawfully set aside by a court order.

The applicant contends that the GBA’s decision to organise fresh elections for all leadership positions, including the one she currently occupies, undermines her legitimate tenure and violates principles of fairness and due process within the association.

Request For Court Intervention

As part of her legal action, Frimpong is asking the court to issue restraining orders preventing the Ghana Bar Association from conducting elections for the Publicity Secretary position while the matter remains before the court.

She is also seeking a perpetual injunction that would bar the association from organising elections for the position during the period she believes she is lawfully entitled to hold office.
Her court filings reference an earlier legal development involving an injunction reportedly obtained by Prince Ganaku, under an order issued by Justice Ali Baba Abature, which had implications for the operations of the Young Lawyers Forum.

Internal Governance Question

The case has drawn attention to governance and electoral processes within the Ghana Bar Association’s young lawyers wing, which plays a key role in representing newly qualified lawyers and shaping professional development within the legal community.
