A young unemployed man identified as George has been arrested for allegedly impersonating his girlfriend, Georgina, during the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), in an incident that has sparked renewed concerns over examination malpractice in Ghana.
According to reports, the suspect reportedly entered an examination hall and attempted to sit for the papers on behalf of his girlfriend.
The alleged scheme was uncovered when examination officials detected irregularities and apprehended him in the act, leading to his immediate arrest.
A video capturing the dramatic moment has since circulated widely on social media, drawing public attention to the lengths some individuals are willing to go to bypass examination rules.
The incident adds to a growing list of malpractice cases recorded during the 2026 BECE.
Education authorities have already expressed concern over the rising trend. The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, recently disclosed that at least 178 candidates have been affected by examination irregularities this year, with some papers withheld and others cancelled.
Speaking ahead of the examinations, the minister urged candidates to uphold integrity and honesty, describing these values as essential to both academic success and national development.
He also warned invigilators to maintain strict ethical standards, cautioning that any compromise in supervision would attract sanctions.
