Lionel Messi’s glittering FIFA World Cup career came to a heartbreaking end on Sunday night as defending champions Argentina surrendered their crown to Spain, with the veteran captain unable to hold back his emotions after the final whistle.
The 39-year-old football icon was visibly devastated after Spain claimed a hard-fought 1-0 victory after extra time in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final at the New York/New Jersey Stadium, bringing the curtain down on one of the greatest international careers in football history.
Messi had entered the tournament hoping to guide Argentina to back-to-back World Cup titles after inspiring La Albiceleste to glory in Qatar in 2022.
Throughout the competition, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner once again demonstrated his enduring class, leading his country to the final with a series of outstanding performances.
Argentina’s journey to the showpiece match included victories over several top opponents, while Messi continued rewriting the record books.
He finished the tournament with eight goals and four assists in eight matches and became the first player in men’s World Cup history to score in seven consecutive World Cup matches.
The final, however, proved to be a bridge too far for the defending champions.
Spain controlled much of the contest with their trademark possession-based football, dominating midfield and limiting Argentina’s attacking opportunities.
Despite Messi’s efforts to inspire his teammates, the South Americans struggled to break down a disciplined Spanish defence and failed to register a shot on target throughout the match.
Argentina’s task became even more difficult in stoppage time when midfielder Enzo Fernández was sent off after receiving a second yellow card, forcing Lionel Scaloni’s side to play the entire extra-time period with 10 men.
Spain eventually capitalised on their numerical advantage in the 106th minute when Ferran Torres broke the deadlock with a composed finish, handing La Roja a historic second FIFA World Cup title and ending Argentina’s hopes of retaining the trophy.
As the final whistle sounded, an emotional Messi was overcome with disappointment, knowing he had played his final match on football’s biggest stage.
The Argentine captain embraced teammates and coaching staff before leaving the field to a standing ovation from supporters, many of whom recognised the remarkable legacy he leaves behind.
Although his farewell ended in defeat, Messi’s World Cup career ranks among the greatest in the history of the tournament.
From his debut in Germany in 2006 to lifting the trophy in Qatar in 2022 and leading Argentina back to another final in 2026, he inspired generations with his extraordinary talent, leadership and consistency.
His final World Cup campaign added another memorable chapter to an illustrious career, even if the ending fell short of the fairytale conclusion he had hoped for.
While Spain celebrated becoming world champions, football fans around the globe paused to salute one of the game’s greatest players as Lionel Messi bid an emotional farewell to the FIFA World Cup, leaving behind a legacy that will be remembered for generations.
