By Daniel Bampoe

The deepening internal divisions within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Awutu Senya East Constituency, Kasoa took another dramatic turn on Thursday after reports emerged that party officials allegedly stormed Obaatampa Radio in Kasoa, owned by Hawa Koomson, former MP resulting in the station’s temporary closure amid heightened political tensions in the constituency.

According to reports from the station and eyewitness accounts, a group alleged to include the NDC Central Regional Chairman, Prof. Richard Asiedu, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Awutu Senya East, Seth Banini, and other party supporters reportedly entered the premises of the radio station following discussions on the ongoing dispute involving Awutu Senya East Member of Parliament, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, and Constituency Chairman Stephen Ofosu Agyare.

The reports further alleged that equipment at the station was vandalised during the incident, while some journalists and staff members on duty were assaulted.

Witnesses also claimed that more than 40 police officers were deployed to the premises to restore calm and maintain law and order after the incident.

Internal Crisis Escalates

The latest development comes at a time when the Awutu Senya East NDC is grappling with one of its most serious internal crises since the party secured victory in the 2024 general elections.

The dispute initially gained national attention after a leaked audio recording, allegedly involving Constituency Chairman Stephen Ofosu Agyare, circulated widely on social media.

In the recording, the chairman is alleged to have made offensive personal remarks about the Member of Parliament.

The recording triggered outrage among sections of the NDC Women’s Wing, with demonstrators demanding disciplinary action against the chairman.

Fresh Allegations Fuel Political Tension

As public debate over the leaked audio continued, social media platforms became inundated with documents purporting to relate to the personal affairs of individuals connected to the controversy.

Among them was a document claimed to be a statutory declaration relating to the customary marriage of the MP’s husband, Yussif Yunusah.

The alleged attack on Obaatampa Radio has also raised concerns among media practitioners and press freedom advocates, who are expected to monitor developments closely should the allegations be confirmed by law enforcement authorities.

As of the time of publication, neither the NDC’s national leadership, the Central Regional leadership, the Awutu Senya East MP, the Municipal Chief Executive, nor the constituency chairman had issued an official statement addressing the latest incident at the radio station.

Police have also not released an official account regarding the reported deployment of officers or the allegations of assault and vandalism.
