Aggrieved members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Tema Central Constituency took dramatic action on Tuesday morning, locking up the offices of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) at Community 8 to protest what they described as an “improper” appointment of the District Manager.
According to the demonstrators, the appointment of an outsider to head the NHIS District office in Tema undermines the efforts of local party members who worked to secure the NDC’s victory in the 2024 general elections.
The protest was spearheaded by senior constituency executives, including Constituency Chairman Benjamin Djakumah, Secretary Henry Davidson Aryee, and Organizer Razak Mutawakilu, who coordinated the peaceful lock-up of the office after asking staff to leave.
At a press briefing following the action, Aryee expressed the constituency’s disapproval, stressing that qualified individuals from within Tema Central and East Constituencies were overlooked.
“We are surprised and disappointed that someone unknown to our area has been appointed, despite the numerous local party members with the qualifications and dedication necessary for this role,” he stated.
He further warned that the protest would continue until the appointment was reversed and a proper consultation with local NDC executives was conducted.
Investigations revealed that the decision to appoint the District Manager was reportedly made unilaterally by the Mayor of Tema, Ebi Bright, without consultation with the NDC executives in the constituency.
The lack of collaboration has sparked accusations of bypassing party structures and favoritism, which the constituency argues could erode trust in local governance and undermine party unity.
When approached for comment, a Special Aide to the Mayor indicated that Ebi Bright had just arrived at the office and would respond to the situation in due course.
The delay in addressing the controversy has further fueled speculation about the decision-making process and intensified calls for transparency in public appointments.
