NFA Partners Industry Stakeholders To Expand Cinema Access Across Ghana

The National Film Authority (NFA) has launched a new initiative aimed at reviving Ghana’s cinema-going culture, expanding access to film exhibition centres and creating sustainable revenue opportunities for local filmmakers.

Dubbed the Cinema Train Initiative, the project was officially launched on Saturday, October 31, 2026, at Silverbird Cinemas in Accra, bringing together a platform designed to connect filmmakers, distributors, cinema operators and audiences.

The initiative is expected to address some of the longstanding challenges confronting Ghana’s film industry, particularly limited access to cinema facilities, inadequate opportunities for filmmakers to exhibit their productions and difficulties in generating revenue from completed films.

Speaking at the launch, NFA Chief Executive Officer, Kafui Danku, said the initiative was developed through consultations with key industry stakeholders to establish a more accessible and commercially sustainable film exhibition system.

She observed that many Ghanaian filmmakers spend months and, in some cases, years producing films, only for their works to struggle to reach audiences because of limited screening opportunities.

According to her, building a sustainable film industry requires more than producing quality content; it also demands effective distribution and exhibition systems that allow filmmakers to connect with audiences and earn returns on their investments.

“We cannot build a sustainable film industry if we produce films without creating pathways for people to watch them. So, that is why we are launching the CinemaTrain initiative today,” she stated.

Danku explained that the initiative was not simply about organising film screenings but about developing an ecosystem in which producers could generate income from their productions, distributors could connect content to available markets and cinema operators could attract more audiences.

Digital Platform to Simplify Film Access

A major component of the initiative is the CinemaTrain digital platform, which is expected to make it easier for movie lovers to discover available screenings and purchase tickets.

Through the platform, users can access information about film screenings and make ticket purchases, providing a central point of connection between audiences and cinema operators.

Expanding Cinema Centres

Beyond the digital platform, the National Film Authority is also pursuing plans to increase the number of cinema exhibition centres across the country through partnerships with industry stakeholders, private businesses, public institutions and local communities.
