BY Daniel Bampoe

Valentino Nii Noi Nortey, 41, a former New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Ghana’s Korley Klottey Constituency, is in custody in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, after allegedly stabbing his wife in a domestic altercation that has left the family and community in shock.

The Lower Paxton Township Bureau of Police has charged Nii Noi Nortey with attempted homicide (first-degree felony), possession of an instrument of crime (first-degree misdemeanor), and tampering with evidence (second-degree misdemeanor).

He is currently held at Dauphin County Prison, with bail denied due to the severity of the charges.

The incident reportedly took place on January 17, 2026, at the couple’s residence on Mayfair Drive.

Police were notified around 9:40 a.m. after the woman arrived at a local hospital with multiple stab wounds.

She underwent emergency surgery and was later reported to be in stable condition.

According to court documents, Nortey allegedly confessed to attacking his wife with a kitchen knife.

Family Account – The Uncle Speaks

In conversations with reporters, a close family member, identified as the victim’s uncle, provided additional insight into the events leading up to the attack.

The uncle described the marriage as “troubled for some time,” saying that tensions had been building over months.

He explained that the wife had recently indicated her intention to separate from Nortey, which allegedly triggered the violent confrontation.

“He threatened that he would either harm himself or hurt her,” the uncle stated.

“We never imagined he could go this far. It is terrifying to think that what started as a conversation about ending the marriage ended with this violence.”

According to him, the victim initially locked herself in a room to escape the attack, but Nortey reportedly returned, forced open the door, and continued his assault.

She raised her hands to protect herself, which deflected some of the blows from her neck to her torso.

The uncle further revealed that the victim was only allowed to seek medical attention after promising that she would not press charges.

“Even then, we rushed her to the hospital immediately,” he said. “We are thankful she survived, but this has left the whole family shaken.”

Political Background And Public Profile

Nortey is a prominent figure in Ghanaian politics, having previously contested the Korley Klottey parliamentary seat on the NPP ticket.

Although he was unsuccessful in the election, his candidacy had brought him into the public eye, and he was recognized for his community engagement and political activism within the constituency.

Since relocating abroad, however, Nortey has largely remained out of the Ghanaian political spotlight.

Legal Proceedings and Current Status

Following his arrest, Nortey was arraigned by Magisterial District Judge David Judy.

He was denied bail, and a preliminary hearing was scheduled for January 26, 2026, to determine whether the case will proceed to the Court of Common Pleas.

Under US law, cases involving alleged attempted homicide are treated with strict scrutiny, and the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

The authorities are also investigating the alleged tampering with evidence charge, while the possession of an instrument of crime charge relates to the kitchen knife used in the attack.

Legal observers note that these charges carry severe penalties if Nortey is convicted.

Impact On Family

The family is grappling with the aftermath of the attack. The couple has five children, all of whom are now under the care of relatives.

“The children are innocent victims in all of this,” the uncle said. “This incident has changed our family forever, and they will need years of support to process what has happened.”

The uncle also emphasized the importance of raising awareness about domestic violence.

“We hope that sharing this story will make people understand the dangers of escalating arguments and the importance of mental health and conflict resolution in marriages,” he said.
