NPP Boys Pick Forms for Bawumia

In a highly symbolic show of loyalty and youthful energy, dozens of constituency and regional youth organisers of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) stormed the party’s national headquarters in Accra on Wednesday, August 13, to secure flagbearer nomination forms for former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

The move, which came a day after the celebration of International Youth Day, was not just a procedural step in the party’s internal electoral process but a statement of intent by the party’s youth wing.

Arriving in matching NPP-branded attire, the group sang patriotic songs and chanted slogans, turning what could have been a routine administrative act into a political spectacle.

According to the NPP constitution, the purchase of nomination forms marks the official entry of a candidate into the flagbearership race.

Dr. Bawumia, who served as Vice President from 2017 to 2025, has long been tipped as a frontrunner in the party’s bid to recapture power from the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2028 elections.

His supporters point to his economic management record, digitalisation agenda, and role in stabilising the macroeconomic environment during his tenure as key credentials for the presidency.

Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the event, Isaac Obeng, a youth organiser and spokesperson for the group, described the act as both a celebration of the role of young people in politics and an endorsement of Dr. Bawumia’s leadership vision.

“Yesterday was International Youth Day, and as youth organisers and deputies from across various constituencies, we believe we could not remain idle without marking this remarkable day,” Obeng said.

“We are here to pick the forms for our incoming president, Insha Allah, Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia. We consider this a gift to him from the youth of the party.”

Obeng explained that the group’s decision was a coordinated national effort, with representatives drawn from multiple regions to demonstrate unity and determination.

After collecting the forms, the delegation proceeded to Dr. Bawumia’s residence and campaign office to formally present them to him.

The youth organisers expressed optimism that under Bawumia’s leadership, Ghana could enter what they described as a “new chapter” in its development trajectory.

“We know that, Insha Allah, this day is the day Ghana’s destiny will be rewritten,” Obeng said, taking a swipe at the governing NDC.

“What the NDC has done and continues to do only proves that the things Dr. Bawumia accomplished as Vice President are exactly what our country needs now.”

Dr. Bawumia’s anticipated bid comes at a critical time for the NPP, which is regrouping after its 2024 electoral defeat.

The party’s grassroots mobilisation, particularly among young people, is expected to play a decisive role in shaping the upcoming primaries and, ultimately, the 2028 national elections.
